Americana and roots music - No Depression

The Americana and roots music authority

The awards show is on Dec. 2 at the Liberty Hotel. More than 15 artists will perform short 30 minute sets across four rooms at the Liberty, all celebrating local music.

You can VOTE at http://www.thebostonmusicawards.com/contests/bma09/

The full story and all the nominees can be found in this Boston Herald Story.

Here's a couple of the interesting categories (in my opinion):

Album of the Year
Manners - Passion Pit
The Everyday Visuals - The Everyday Visuals
Saving Seamus Ryan - Esoteric
Diving for Gold - Session Americana
Axe to Fall - Converge
Torrent - Will Dailey
Oh My God, Charlie Darwin - The Low Anthem

Americana Act of the Year
Sarah Borges & the Broken Singles
Dennis Brennan
Eilen Jewell
Girls Guns and Glory
Mean Creek
Jimmy Ryan & Hayride
Session Americana
Sea Monsters

Here's a great story (with photos) from the 2008 Awards. I personally like the pic of Colt (of 2008 Americana winner Girls Guns and Glory) schmoozin' with Donny Wahlberg.

Just a little editorial commentary on the nominees...

- Congrats to Session Americana and The Low Anthem. Both had great albums this year.

- Deer Tick was nominated as Best Folk Act. I hope they win, but I don't think I'd put them in that category...

- I'm not sure I'd put Mean Creek under Americana, either... They're definitely not Folk, either.

- I'd nominate Cassavettes for their new album. They're definitely not Folk, either.

- They give an Unsung Hero Award at the show, which last year deservedly went to drummer and Toad/Lizard booking agent Billy Beard.

- If I got to nominate this year's Unsung Hero, it would go to the Part Time Man of Rock Bill Janovitz, for many reasons; but especially for Buffalo Tom, Exile on Lansdowne St, Hot Stove/Cool Music, Session Americana and of course, the Feb residency at Toad, ....

Already voted. I have some thoughts about these awards but won't commit them to the internet. Catch me in person and I'll spout.

* New Act: Mean Creek
* Male Vocalist: Eli "Paperboy" Reed
* Female Vocalist: Sarah Cronin (Drug Rug)

I believe that Sarah Borges has won in the past. I thought I had read that Dennis Brennan had won the Unsung Hero previously (as has Tim Gearan and Billy Beard), so this may be a repeat win for him, too.
