Brilliant, Amanda! Thanks. (I can't believe I unknowingly quoted the phrase "Alan Lomax-style" from the booklet.)
When I was googling about the album a few weeks ago I found sqirrelled away in the blackblocks of the bloodshot site what appears to be the album booklet with all the songs, lyrics, liner notes etc. So there you go.
Greg, As the publicity blurb says, the songs on Roger's album were written by Roger's (Aboriginal) "peers and predecessors". Some are "traditional' songs - writer unknown. I can't locate a full list of credits, but thewriters include Dougie Young (Crow Flies Backwards), Kath Mills (Arafura Pearl), Harry Williams (Blue Gums Calling Me Back Home), Archie Roach (Took the Children Away). Dougie Young's song was collected, Alan Lomax-style, in Wilcannia in the early 1960s. Several of Young's 'field recordings' are available on YouTube.
Comment by Greg Reilly on February 2, 2013 at 2:55am While I'm here, thought I'd put the word out to interstaters, when in Melbourne, make sure you get your arse into the Lomond pub in Nicholson St, East Brunswick, for country/roots music, a good time and a haven away from pubs full of 20-somethings.
Comment by Greg Reilly on February 2, 2013 at 2:48am Onya, Amanda Rose, I've been turning all my mates on to it. Hope you do the same. I just couldn't believe I didn't know about this bloke. The man's a poet, the album is a revelation.
I've pre-ordered it Greg. From what I've heard and read I wholeheartedly agree. (saw Roger and Buddy Knox play quite a bit at Tamworth fest over the years)
Comment by Greg Reilly on February 1, 2013 at 6:06pm Who is Roger Knox? Well, his album, Stranger In My Land, is an amazingly powerful and urgently vital recording, the words of which every Australian should hear.
Hey Steve, hope you're well. I'm bringing my 15 year old niece this time so will be indoctrinating her into good music. Looking forward to Chris Smither as always, some of the "world" type bands they've got, Johnny Irion (I know he is usually an afterthought listed with the Guthries but his solo album Ex Tempore is an overlooked gem), and a bunch I haven't heard of ....
Hi Ms Rose - I'll be there as always. Another good lineup. I'm personally looking forward to seeing Red Molly and Zoe Keating.
Is anyone going to the Blue Mountains Music Fest in Katoomba in March? Haven't been for the last couple of years but looking forward to this year, great festival.
