I was recently sent an amazing historical gospel CD to review here on No Depression and I could use some help from you community members who are more familiar with the Nashville culture.

Facts are always the best place to start, so I have indeed researched it. but I also want to get a personal feel for it. So the question is this: what has the effect of Fisk University been on the culture of Nashville, both musically and otherwise, past and present?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Wish I was more knowledgeable, but I'm not. If you've done any research, I'm sure you know the couple of tiny half-anecdotes I have to offer. Of course, the Fisk Jubilee Singers hold a strong place in history (and I'm guessing that's why you're asking about Fisk). Secondly, Fisk is located near Jefferson Street, which used to have a somewhat thriving blues and jazz club scene long ago. I don't know if the school and its students/professors contributed to this scene, but that might be something to ask of someone who actually does know something of the history. Frankly, I feel that Fisk flies VERY low under the radar here in Nashville, especially considering its high ranking among HBCU's. Or maybe I'm just traveling in the wrong circles.

For the past few years, Fisk has primarily been in the news due to financial difficulties. Specifically, there had been plans to sell an art collection donated by Georgia O' Keefe and/or Alfred Stieglitz which became a very contentious affair. The estate(s) of the donating families felt they did not have the right to sell the collection (a pretty amazing collection of modern art, particularly for such a small school.) The school ended up not selling. I doubt that's any real help to you, but that's all I got!
Indeed it's a collection of early recordings (1909-1916) from the Fisk Jubilee Quartet. The review is coming along good, but its just difficult because it was of a decidedly different era.
