Hi all,

I am going to San Francisco at the the end of this month and I'm having a hard time finding where the good music venues are. What are the good places ti catch some roots/folk/alt-country music?

Thanks in advance,

Basic House Concert  Information

Alice Stuart - Oct. 12, 2011

Venue gets 1/3 of the door. Artist gets balance of door and 100% of merch. We cannot offer any guarantee.

We don't sell anything. We supply all promo/printing. We offer complimentary refreshments (coffee, tea, juice, water) and patrons may bring their choice of beverages.

We have a great relationship with the local community radio station (KVMR), and can usually arrange a call-in interview the week of the show, or an in-studio interview and performance the day of the show, and air play of any CD you want to promote. . We also regularly get nice articles in the local paper about upcoming shows (they gave Butch Hancock a full front page color pic).

Hey,

I'd like to turn you onto  Lee Boy Simpson and his wife, Suzannah Simpson.  Lee Boy has had two very active grass roots bands and has friends, family and fans all over Cali.  They are looking to play house concerts throughout the state.  Perhaps, you would have him for a house concert sometime.

Kerf,

Rather than looking at venues I think you should look for artists to see where they're playing.  I don't think there are venues that cater to one genre of music, rather they book the acts they think will fill the place.  So like the excellent Great American Music Hall might one night have the Kronos Quartet and the next The Felice Brothers, venues book a wide range of acts.  Although places like Yoshi's are predominately jazz and maybe some of the east bay blues houses book blues bands, for the most part find a band  and follow them to where they're playing.

I am on individual emails from lots of venues so that's how I usually find but for starters you can go to the clearinghouses like ...to see what's playing around town.

Thanks Tenlayers,

These two sites will help me get around town and see what is exciting musically in San Fran.  I will bookmark them! There are many artists I'd like to see, but where do you start? Knowing where they could potentially play helps.

cheers,

Dave

It may be too late but Amnesia, the Atlas Cafe and the Plough and Stars all have bluegrass on a regular basis.

Thanks for all your advice - had a great time in San Francisco - went to the Saloon in North Beach to catch some blues, then the Boom Boom (for some Funk/R&B), then the Beach(or Park) Chalet by the ocean to catch The Mermen. We loved The Mermen!

Cheers,

Dave
