If you could choose 4 heads to comprise a Mount Rushmore-type tribute to American Singer-Songwriters(includes Canada and Mexico), who would they be?
The 4 heads I would choose are:
Townes Van Zandt
As much as I love him, John Hiatt would just miss the cut. John Prine, Hank Williams, Neil Young and Kris Kristofferson were also finalists.
This is going to be a difficult Rushmore to top
Excellent choices, Jack.
Thanks Jack......that made my day.
I think I've still got to learn a lot about Americana, that's the reason why I'm here.
So far my list looks like this:
Mark Olson/Gary Louris
Tuco, looks to me like you've got a pretty good start on learning about Americana; that's a fine list of singer-songwriters!
Thanks, Randy. I always liked Bob Dylan and Neil Young. But in the first place I was interested in Zappa and prog rock. But the older I get the more I appreciate alternative country. I hope to discover some unknown gems.
It is so great to see Howe Gelb in a Rushmore ;)
Billy Joe Shaver
Can't resist giving a special mention to Dan Penn , legend of Soul music !
And for Canada :
Your post is the only reason I know Billy Joe Shaver exists...better late than never (thank you)
I just noticed this reply Mary , thanks !
Hope you're a firm fan by now, make sure to check out Waylons 'Honky Tonk Heroes" album, probably the best way to do a quick catch up on Billy Joe's songwriting ability (he wrote 10 of the 11 songs on it !)
Apart from one of the numerous Billy Joe compilations mind you !
