Seriously looking at pulling up and heading out to Austin. Planning to visit for a few days second week of April.

Any suggestions on where to go/what to do/what to avoid? Basically just want to get the best possible sense of what the music is like there.

Thanks

Hi Matt!

Nice to "meet" you here. :)

Although I live in Europe now, I keep a place in Austin still.

It hasn't changed all that much, other than new restaurants and food trucks opening up everywhere.

The music scene, although unfortunately changed and unchanged (as in, still crap pay) is still as vibrant as ever.
A bit over-saturated and sometimes "too hip" but if you head to the locals gems and hangouts out of the way, you'll get a better taste.

It'd take me all day to list places, people etc... but email me privately and I will try to hook you up with some good friends of mine. One in particular owns and runs a great roots/country magazine, as well plays the crap out of that town, knows everyone etc... She's amazing.
I need to check with her before I give out anything, but email me and I'll see what I can do.

If it's not too big of a deal for you to get out there, I do recommend going. Just keep in mind Sixth Street is kind of lame (and not where you will find all the great music). Now is a good time as SXSW is over and the town semi-empty. The weather is also perfect this time of year. Ok, now you're making me want to hop a plane! :-)

Good luck and so good to connect.
warmest,
Christene

If you're looking for traditional country (e.g. honkytonk, western swing), e-mail me and I'll be happy to send you a list of places that will be worth your while.
