I know there is already a thread on Alt-Country/Americana DVDs, but I am thinking more of music in general.

I am probably the last person on earth to sign up for Netflix and I am really just using that as an excuse to start a thread about great music films - documentaries or concert films.

I have "Be Here To Love Me" (doc about Townes Van Zandt) in the queue, as well as the Elvis '68 Comeback Special (yup . . . never seen it), along with several others, but I am always looking for suggestions.

So for myself and for the group - what music films are "must see"?

heartworn highways!
Love the music in this.
Where do I start?I have a ton of music DVDs. Faves include;

Lucinda Williams on Austin City Limits is great
Wilco's I Am Trying To Break Your Heart is highly recommended
as is Jeff Tweedy's Sunken Treasure
Definatlely get Neil Young's Heart of Gold
Spinal Tap, of course
Leonard Cohen's I'm Your Man
Alison Krauss and Union Station Live
X- The Unheard Music is AWESOME!

Get The Harry Smith Project - a great folk/roots concert and Farm Aid's 20th Anniversary disc.
Sat Nite Live has a 5 disc box set of bands who've played on SNL
If you're a Beatles fan then you'll need the Anthology and A Hard Days Night and the concert for Bangladesh.
And of course you'll want the staples like Woodstock and The Last Waltz.

That should keep you busy for awhile.
Thanks - I've seen the Wilco movie (IATTBYH), and Spinal Tap, but all of the others I need to get to. Appreciate all the recommendations!
You know, I'm not sure I can watch "I'm Trying to Break Your Heart," again since Jay Bennet's death. Having seen it just after it's release I now definitely have a different take on his very public exit from the band. The movie did not paint a flattering portrait of the guy, and I think he had a hard time living that down.
What has changed my POV is the amazing stuff he did after Wilco compared to the quality of the post-Jay Wilco. I'd say Wilco's lost was substantial, and Jay benefited quite a lot, creatively, from the break-up.
Lately, I've been groovin' to The Last Waltz (The Band). Also, you can't beat the Coen Bros.' O Brother Where Art Thou.
Unknown Passage--The Dead Moon Story
Even if you aren't into their music, the story is amazing. I love the Dead Moon family!
Thanks - I added that one as well and when I did a recommendation came up of one I forgot i have been wanting to see - Jandek on Corwood.
The Gram Parsons documentary Fallen Angel, from 2004, is excellent. My all time favorite is Emmylou Harris "Building the Wrecking Ball," documentary but Netflix probably doesn't have it. I think it was only offered on PBS or as a promo. If you can find it, it is mesmerizing.
BUMP.

Watched Standing In The Shadows Of Motown the other day. It was very good. The Funk Brothers - what an amazing group of talent. There are some great anecdotes relayed in this film, some great personalities, and some awesome performances.
I adore that film. I'll always be a huge Motown fan.
this is one of the best music movies without doubt. better than you might think, even if you think you are over motown. see it.
