Do we have a thread like this?...I went back 8 pages and didn't see anything...anyway...who have you seen lately?...small clubs, big concerts, house concerts, the guy in the park hoping for change in his guitar case...

I saw Jon Dee Graham and Jesse Sublett the other night doing Murder Ballads Saturday night at the Evangeline Cafe, then Lincoln Durham joined by Ray Wylie Hubbard's son Lucas and after that was the Resentments at the Saxon Pub...that's always a good show...James McMurtry and Jimmie Dale Gilmore will be doing a Haiti benefit show Wednesday at the Scholtz Bier Garten...

Nationally, I saw the Bonnie Raitt/Taj Mahal tour, Lyle Lovett for the first time, great! Steve Morse Band, Dicky Betts, Project Object and Kung Fu; a cool new project from a group of big talent in New Haven, CT.
Really looking forward to seeing Tom Russell this Saturday(23rd). Tom always puts on a great show and will be interesting to hear the new songs live.

I have good memories of PPL...funny about Craig Fuller...he came through austin a couple months back or so and played at the Saxon Pub without much publicity...which was too bad cuz the place was only about half full...it was a free happy hour show...
Yo La Tengo. Last night, Lawrence, Kansas. Awesome, awesome show.

Considering a trip down to Knuckleheads in KC Saturday night to see Big Smith.
We saw Ian Brown a week ago (Ex Stone Roses) in Mannheim Germany. Ian is a big star in the UK but outside England pretty unknown. 300 people watching Ian at the Feuerwache and enjoying his faster ravesongs. The slower songs were not so good because his voice was a bit weak today. But in the end it was a good concert. - By the way - my first concert with a selfbought ticket was Joey Dee & The Starlighters, all guys from New York City, in 1963 here in Mannheim.

Some of the best live music is at small venues (no prejudice here!). Since fewer and fewer artists are supported by the recording industry, and everyone is going DIY, the best music is on the road with bands living the lives of troubadours. The competition is fierce, even on small stages. That's why there's so much good original stuff available now.

I saw Chip Taylor do "Wild Thing" at the Loveless Barn just outside Nashville a few weeks ago. Heard a ton of bands cover that song, but nobody does it like the original. That night Jason Ringenberg (Jason and the Scorchers) and Will Hoge were also in fine form. That's a night to remember. Wish the sound had been better and there weren't 100 people talking during the performance (also a radio show), but I still enjoyed the show.

Also saw some new bands at the Exit/In and The Basement while we were down there. Was fun to see how things are done there. What's the deal with Nashville? There seemed to be a lot fewer bartenders per audience member and they weren't exactly what you'd call overtaxed. I guess folks just don't imbibe so much in the South.
When I read all your letters I get green with envy. In some letters fans speaking of Bonnie Raitt like she's a neighbour of the writer. Many of my favourite musicians touring permanently through the States but never show up in Germany. 10 years ago in a little town nearby, a lot of US stars of the 3rd row show up here. The Shaking Apostels, The Rainravens, The Hooblers and others, it was like heaven but these days - the club has closed down and no chance to see the likes of Cindy Bullens or Raitt. But on the other hand we had a lot of british newcomer bands with american roots in music you never see in the states - but thats not the same. Cry....:-)))
Saw Govt. Mule in Oxford, MS and it was good. Saw a band that might not be on anybody's radar yet but they were excellent last night in Tupelo, MS. American Aquarium from Raleigh, NC. The are opening for the Drive By Truckers on this leg of their tour, but I predict their opening days are numbered. These guys are good. Great sound. Strong lead singer. Solid guitar work. Best live show I've seen in a while. Saw the Dexateens in Oxford, MS a few months ago and I guess that was the last really great, high energy show I saw before last night. Check out American Aquarium though. Name, of course, comes from a Wilco lyric. Good stuff.
Last show I saw was a while back last year - Johnny Reid. Before that (for old time's sake) BSB and then before that was Bob Dylan.
John Hammond doin' his great Delta Blues in Scottsdale-the venue was abit strange!
Steve Earle, and Hayes Carll at The Aladdin in Portland; and Patti Smith at the Bagdad. A fantastic week!
