What is your favorite music mag these days?

I like most guitar mags, but I guess that's different. I guess I like "American Songwriter", good selection of articles. I like Relix, not as good as they used to be, but they had to diversify, also, the Allman Brother's "Hittin' The Note"  is a good magazine.  Rolling Stone and Billboard are good for industry facts and news. "No Depression" in Print was the best, always would look for that first and Barnes and Noble usually had it.

Of the UK mags I prefer Uncut as it has more of a focus on new music while Mojo tends to be a bit more retro.  For specialist mags, the UK published Fantastic Expedition does a nice line in country rock obscurities while fanzines for the Jefferson Airplane (Holding Together) and Neil Young (Broken Arrow) remain both global and essential.

Over the pond, Under The Radar is always a good read - more indie focused but it's been a source of a lot of good music. And in Europe France's Rock & Folk has been good to me so far.

Happy to endorse +ve comments on Australia's Rhythm - a fine mag.

I like the UK mags best as well. They are expensive as hell but the quality is so much better than what we have in the United States. Mojo used to be my favorite but Uncut's new expanded reviews section now puts it at the top of my list. Q is good, too. American Songwriter has good articles but its reviews section is a little thin. In the States, my new favorite is the return of Magnet magazine. Under the Radar is pretty good but I often disagree with their album ratings. Filter is hit or miss for me, but great if you are into cool design elements. I don't know what happened to the management at Spin magazine, but their new design and content  is awful plus they've put more of a focus on fashion and now seem to be targeting a hipster audience.

I have to agree with you, and it is a bit baffling, the UK mags, both in music and guitar are overall better, Good American mags like Bluegrass UnLimited(I think is still in print), you can't find. Guitar mag "Premier Guitar" is just leaps and jumps ahead of like Guitar Player or Acoustic guitar, the later just not having a lot of substance. With "No Depression" gone and "Paste" which was for me a pretty distant second to the iconic in print "No Depression". And I am not saying that because this is No Depression's site, it was what I always looked for first, it put alot between it's pages of good articles and I especially liked the Reviews. Nothing really has jumped up to take "No Depression's Place". American Song Writer is a good read, but pretty one dimensional. The web has taken alot away from the shelves, but it just doesn't seem to have the impact of a good magazine to me, I guess you can call me old fashioned.

I recently stumbled upon Turnstyled Junkpiled( http://turnstyledjunkpiled.com/). It bills itself as L.A's Americana magazine but it is a pretty good general Americana publication. I am not 100% sure but I think it may be online only. At any rate it is worth a look.

A really good one that you can (hopefully) find on newsstands in the US is the Big Takeover.  I think it comes out quarterly.  It is a very thick magazine with tons of reviews and interviews  Focus is indie but it does cover Americana.

3rd Coast Music  out of the Austin area.  spot on reliable reviews.  harsh at times. Regularly trashes some favorite of mine, but I don't care, the writing is honest and has a great sense of humor. Dry English wit.

Nov/Dec Issue of "American Songwriter" is awesome, gear gifts, Mumford and Sons, New Dwight Yoacum Cd with Beck article,it is a great issue.

Also miss the printed No Depression....got it as a birthday present and 6 months later it was gone.....Texas Music has some very good articles....last edition has a very good article about the historic Armadillo in Austin.

Penguin Eggs - Canada's Folk, Roots & World Music Magazine

Very cool magazine.  Similar to Froots out of the UK but a lot less expensive to subscribe to.

The N.D. print edition is still my all-time favorite.  I do still enjoy Offbeat, which keeps tabs on the local scene and artists in New Orleans and environs.

I kept all my old copies of No Depression and keep re-reading them. Can't find any other magazine that comes close to what I'm looking for. Hell, I even read the ads.
