Doesn't have to be a great revelation. Doesn't have to change the year in music. Could be old. Could be new. Just has to do it for this week. So what is doing it for you this week?

Tom Waits - Blue Valentine. Revisiting an old favourite , it's even better than i remembered, a truly great album.

I'd also like to mention the Elektra Records 4 - CD box set which i finally tracked down over the Christmas holidays . It is absolutely superb with so many great artists on there : Tim Buckley, Fred Neil, Judy Collins, The Dillards, Love, Paul Siebel, it's just a real treat, lots of artists which i don't already know as well, really enjoying it.

A few years ago I was at my favorite record store and they had shelf of "Staff Picks".  Fred Neil was one of them.  "The Many Sides of Fred Neil"..a compilation two CD affair.  At that point I had never heard of Neil but bought it anyway.  Damn, was that a great spur of the moment decision.

Disappointed in how fate left his career in the shadows of his contemporaries, he should of been more well known.

I guess the heroin didn't help.

I'm a big fan TenLayers , here's a piece i wrote on his second solo album , he pretty much retired after it to move to Florida and work with dolphins , which he did for almost 30 years :

Very nice write-up Stevie.

The liner notes that came with "The Many Sides of Fred Neil" are great as well.  A large portion of them written by John Sebastian and David Crosby

Paul

I can't quit listening to Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit for the last 2 weeks and I've also spent some time listening to Mike Cooley's new acoustic live album.

Rec'd an advanced copy of the upcoming release from David Ford. CD is entitled " Charge" and its brilliant!

I include two links to allow those of you who may not be aware of this very talented artist to get a feel for what he does.

I hope that you enjoy:

Steeldrivers - HAMMER DOWN

Have been sick with bronchitis so haven't been listening to much music. Only back to it again though the bronchitis lingers on. The song I've been really enjoying though is "Cigarettes & Truckstops" by Lindi Ortega. Lots of Roger Miller also. Heard today that apparently Ethan Johns told someone that Ryan Adams has another album done with Glyn Johns... (insert nerdy squeal of joy here)... Ready to check out the new Bon Jovi album next month also. Not a fan of the first single so we'll see. Also been listening to quite a bit of Bruce Springsteen which manifested itself into a Springsteen / Zombie dream the other day...

Main tracks for me lately...

Whiskeytown - "What May Seem Like Love"

Ryan Adams - "Shining Through the Dark"

Ryan Adams - "Cold Roses"

Bruce Springsteen - "Jack of All Trades"

Bruce Springsteen - "Racing in the Street"

The Avett Brothers - "Live and Die"

Adam Sandler - "Real Love"

Drive-by Truckers - "TVA"

Amanda Shires - "Swimmer... Dreams Don't Keep"

Loudon Wainwright III - "Days That We Die"

Johnny Cash - "I'd Rather Die Young"

Lindi Ortega - "Cigarettes and Truckstops"

Roger Miller - "A Man Like Me"

Roger Miller - "Burning Bridges"

Main ones anyways... :)

Ron Sexsmith, 'Forever Endeavour'

A new Ron Sexsmith album is like an old favorite sweater.

Richard Thompson's Electric produced by Buddy Miller.

1. "Buddy & Jim"---BUDDY MILLER & JIM LAUDERDALE...Another winner from Buddy Miller. This guy is on a roll !

2. "Boys & Girls"---ALABAMA SHAKES...I bought this CD based soley on hearing their song "Hold On"...Hold On is one of my favorite songs of 2012 and the rest of the CD is great also...if you are looking for something new to check out, this might just be it...

Jim James (MMJ) & Chris Stamey new records
