Listening to a lot of Springsteen and Jason Isbell yet. Preordered Jason's new album with the 400 Unit so excited to get that. Have been excited about the promised release of the David Mayfield Parade record (through Kickstarter) but that has been bumped up to January or so.
Back on my hunt for Whiskeytown's version of the Tom T Hall Classic "I Hope it Rains At My Funeral". Every now and then I get reminded to hunt for it. Wonder if I'll ever get lucky enough to find it?
In the middle of the David Menconi book on Ryan and Whiskeytown today. Had planned on reading it sooner or later but was chastized into making it sooner rather than later. Will comment on that on the actaul page for it when I'm finished. Started it this morning and am 1/2 way through.
Have to clean big time today so likely will be back to Springsteen's "Born in the USA" on the album. We'll see...

I just got a double CD for 1 cent, plus shipping, of Al Stewart's "Definitive Pop Collection". It's old, glossy stuff but the best penny investment in a while.
Recommended listening: "Crow" by Berkley Hart. They are San Diego's best roots band and this disc is superb.

Rosie Flores - "Working Girl Guitar"
Didn't realize Rosie was all that and a bag of chips on the six-stringer. She cooks on this release.

Four way tie for my favorite album this week: 3 CDs and a single track.
1) Chris Knight - Little Victories. It's not my favorite album of his, but there are some great songs. The cross of electric and acoustic is great, but Tammy Rogers' "rock and roll" mandolin (and fiddle) add a great touch to the overall sound.
2) Ian Hunter - Shrunken Heads. I've been listening to his new one, "When I'm President" a lot, and it's great, but it's made me pull out his fantastic album from 2007. It reminds me of the rock and roll I heard growing up that made me want to be a musician, and could be the best album Mott the Hoople never made. The closing track, "Read 'Em 'N' Weep" is one of the most hearbreakingly beautiful songs about heartbreak I've ever heard.
3) John Zorn - A Vision in Blakelight. Cool acoustic jazz, gorgeous melodies, interesting instrumentation (harp and vibes on many tracks) and some top-notch players including John Medeski on piano and organ and the amazing Joey Baron on drums.
and the single track - 4) Trampled by Turtles - "Where is my Mind?" (Pixies cover). With the mandolin, this sounds better than the original.

Shovels & Rope --- Can listen to it over and over, great vocals and lyrics. My favorite "Birmingham".
