I was watching Kenny Greenberg play guitar as part of Pat McLaughlin's stellar band, and thinking there's no way the guitar can be played any better than that. There are many famous guitarists, but so many more that are un-heralded or under-heralded who are as good or better. Aside from some wildly talented but well known on ND guitarists like Dave Alvin, Chuck Prophet and Kelly Joe Phelps, here are a few off the top of my head who are just incredibly talented guitarists who could teach a thing or two to some far more famous names:

Kenny Vaughan
Andrew Hardin
Chris Miller
Thad Beckman
John Jackson
Joe Eddy Hines
D. Clinton Thompson
Scrappy Judd Newcomb
Willie Porter

The other day I was with several musician-friends discussing No Depression & some of the discussions that were posted. I was surprised when I mentioned two great guitarists and none associated these two men as great guitar players. They said one was a bit of a country clown / musician and the other was a middle of the road country singer famous for a role in a John Wayne movie. Can it be true some people are not aware of the guitar magic of both Roy Clark and Glen Campbell? I am not a big country fan but I have seen these two men play and they are both amazing guitarists. Clark is also a great banjo player and -- classical guitarist. So, while these two are famous -- I just feel that today they are basically under-heralded. Neither of these two "old" men have lost their abilities. They deserve another listen.
I'm not overly familiar with Roy Clark, but yeah, Glen Campbell!!! I've always enjoyed his music and recall seeing his TV show as a kid, but I was until a few years back completely unaware of his great ability to play guitar, and the fact he recorded and toured with the Beach Boys in their heyday, and had had a long, very successful career as a session guitarist recording with Dean Martin, Sinatra, Merle Haggard and I forget who else, it was a long, long list of famous names that he worked with.
This brings to mind Jerry Reed, the great guitarist was passed away a couple of years ago. When he was hot, he was hot!
love jerry!
recently got "guitar man" cd with his renditions of many covers
fantastic for a couple bucks!!
Even when he wasn't hot, he was hot.
Saw Glen Campbell last year in London...astonishing cover of 'Classical Gas'...
Roy Clark was a Bluegrass-style player, sort of Joe Maphis without the 'flash.' Glen Campbell, well, there's no way I can tell you how fantastic a guitarist he was/is. I saw him jam one night and he burned in a manner that was truly unbelievable. A little Django, a little Jimmy Bryant. I was stunned.--JH
Roy Clark was great and still puts on an amazing show. Glenn Campbell is also very good, as is Waylon Jennings.
Colin Linden solo and with band
larry campbell(check out marie knight's album of rev gary davis covers) and jim weider who doesn't get due justice to step into robbie robertson's shoes

also amos garrett, for being an all-around badass and wendell holmes of the holmes brothers
Agreed on this last one. Saw these guys this past July at Ravinia on Chicago's North Shore with the
Levon Helm Band----awesome!

Just recalled another obscure one: Tommy Borscheid, who spent time with Minneapolis's Honeydogs
(very underrated) and then toured a bit with Rhett Miller. Don't know what he's doing these days
Um...... GURF MORLIX!!!!!!
