to songwriters - how do you handle protection of your music?
I'm wondering what the general idea is in the songwriting community about protecting your music. Do writers generally copywrite songs? I spoke with a songwriter fron Houston a couple of nights ago, he said the way he handles it, is to register his songs with BMI. Any info / advice would be greatly appreciated.

I copywright, then I have them published. Pretty simple

In Australia we're lucky enough to have APRA; an organisation that allows you to register songs for protection. It is pretty simple.
Google BMI and see how you go.
