so it's New Year's Eve - a time for reflection -  or drinking, you take your choice...

but I was sitting here thinking about how we come to know good music - sometimes, of course its through the auspices of magazines, radio, on line discussion  such as this wonderful forum. but more often, its personal recommendation, and I started to think about all those friends who've said' hey, have you heard so and so? check them out - you'd love it'.

so I'd like to say a public thank you, first off, to my Uncle Martin, who in the early 70s trusted his adolescent niece with his pristine  first pressing  Bob Dylan albums, and said 'you'll like  these - go and record them  on to cassette'.

who would  you like to thank?

Wow, I just finished listening to your CD I bought when you came through San Francisco and played the Rip Tide out in the foggy Sunset District.

Happy New Year to you.

Hey  Happy New Year  to you  too! hope its filled with  music!!

I suppose my first thanks should be to my dad. When I was a kid he introduced me to the majesty of the Stax label. It's influenced the way I've listened to music ever since.  My dad introduced me to a lot of good music when I was a kid and now I try to return the favor to him when we see each other.

that's impressive - your Dad seems to be an exception - most of us look  down  on  our  paren'ts musical  tastes as we go off and find our own musical path.

my Dad played a lot of  classical  music  when i was  a kid which  at the time i loathed - Ican appreciate  some of it now.... in certain moods

Sid Griffin , ex - Long Ryders .

Way back in 86 i saw an album by a band i'd never heard of in my life - The International Submarine Band.
i was into The Smiths , The Cure , New Order stuff like that but i was intrigued and read Sid's sleevenotes on the back . He made it sound so good that i had to take a chance................Been hooked on Country , Americana etc ever since !

Thanks Sid !

Thanks to my mom, Carol, who gave me my passion for music.   As a baby, She rocked me to sleep  singing the Beatles' "Golden Slumbers". She tickled my imagination with Willie Nelson's "Red Headed Stranger."   She sang me the lyrics to Cat Steven's "Moonshadow", James Taylor's "Fire and Rain" and The Eagles.  As I got older, she introduced me to Ricky Skaggs, The Judds, Hank Jr.

But I must thank  my late grandfather, Gilbert for introducing me to Hank Williams.  The fondest memories I have of him revolve around my brother and me listening and singing to the album Hank Williams Greatest Hits.  Our favorite as kids was of course Kawliga:
