Any here on Spotify? It's a cool free service (you can upgrade to pay plans so you don't have to hear the occasional commercial) thta lets you play millions and millions of songs including tons of independent stuff.
I blogged here about my playlists a few weeks ago.
Here's some that might be of interest to ND folks
* The Great Country Albums: From Marty Robbins to The Waco Brothers, some of my favorite country albums of all time. (No "greatest hits" compilations here. These are all albums that were meant to be heard as such.) Currently 12 hours of music here. (Just added albums by John Hartford and George Jones)
* Country Underground: Call it underground country, call it XXX country, (hey, let's a have a flame war about that!) call it the music Nashville does NOT want you to hear (as I do on my Santa Fe Opry radio show in SF, NM) I just added a bunch of tunes to this so it's more than 2 hours.
* '70s Country Jukebox: An hour's worth of country classics (and some shoulda-been classics) that they actually used to play on AM country stations.
* Alt Country, The First Generation: This is country rock from the mid '60s through the mid 70s from The Lovin' Spoonful to Pure Prairie League with Ry Cooder, Little Feat, David Bromberg and more.
*Anybody Here Seen Hank? Songs ABOUT Hank Williams. More than an hour long.
* Dylanology. Dylan covers, Dylan parodies and songs about Bob. Two hours of music.
* Ghosts of Stephen Foster: Foster's in de cold cold ground, but his songs live on.
* Local Yokels:Songs by musicians who live or lived in New Mexico: Lots of great local N.M. bands you might have never heard of, plus some you probably have, from The Handsome Family to Glenn Campbell (who played in his uncle Dick Bills' country band in Albuquerque about 50 years ago), from Big Al Anderson (who has a second home in Santa Fe) to Lefty Frizzell (a song he wrote while doing time in the Chaves County jail.) You'll find Roger Miller, Terry Allen, Bo Diddley and Junior Brown here too.
* Santa Fe Songs: Tunes about or which mention my hometown, or the railroad.
* The Roots of Picnic Time for Potatoheads: Talk about self-indulgence, here's songs that inspired, were mentioned on or were parodied on my own album. Had my album been successful some of these artists would have sued me.

Permalink Reply by Vince Mounts on November 20, 2011 at 2:22pm I'll add mine to the post. I'm guessing people who have been around the genre for a long time won't find a lot of surprises but who knows. The are (very creatively) named Americana #1 - #9 at the moment (it helps me keep them grouped), and are designed for 60-90 minute listening sessions (with two exceptions). Sometimes there are blocks of songs with a theme but mostly it is just stuff that I like that go fairly well together. The boundaries of Americana are no doubt stretched or broken at times. My personal favs are #7, #9, #4 & #1, in that order.
My links will be to the ShareMyPlaylist site. That way anyone can just click on my user name there and see my other non-Americana lists (or ones I've added since #9).
Americana #1 : The Carolina Chocolate Drops and Shawn Colvin dominate.
Americana #2 (Jerry Garcia Edition) : This list has The Grateful Dead and Garcia/Grisman and is longer than the others. With a couple of exceptions these are all covers of country songs or "traditional" songs and not the Dead's own songs. 2nd from last is a song they were playing when Jerry died but had not recorded yet, "So Many Roads." It is from their final concert about a month before Jerry died. Most of my other lists contain other Dead songs too, usually Garcia/Hunter, sometimes as played by them but more often as a cover by a bluegrass artist. If you don't like the Dead you'll still find plenty of other stuff on the lists and you may not even realize you just listened to one of their songs in the case of the covers.
Americana #3 : Somewhat more "mainstream" choices.
Americana #4 : How can you argue with a list that starts with "East Bound and Down," the theme song from Smokey and the Bandit? Neither of Bob Dylan's traditional/folk albums (Good as I Been To You, and World Gone Wrong) are on Spotify so I added alternate versions of those songs and kept the Dylan version in the lists for myself.
Americana #5 : This one seems to have a few subscribers. I have here some songs that tackle some popular traditional subject matter. The story of Stagger Lee and Billy Lyons. And the story of Frankie and Albert. I have 3 different songs about those events, but one of each are from the Bob Dylan albums so you'll only see two. There is also Peggy-O , technically Scottish, but it still sounds like American folk.
Other versions of Stagger Lee can be found on lists #6, #9 & #2
Another version of Frankie & Albert is on #6
Another rendition of Peggy-O is also on #6 titled Fennario by Joan Baez
Step It Up And Go from this list can be found on #4, #6 & #9
Americana #6 : This is kind of a leftovers list; leftover from #5.
Americana #7 : My favorite of the bunch with Levon Helm, The Band of Heathens and Dangermuffin. Don't miss the smokin' version of Jambalaya by Tab Benoit.
Americana #8 (Southern Rockers) : Lynard Skynard, The Outlaws, Sister Hazel, The Black Crowes, North Mississippi Allstars and much more. This list is a lot longer than the others. This stuff never seems to really go with the other lists so I put it all here.
Americana #9 : Sort of a sampler. This might be a good place for newbies to start.
I also have a poker themed list Final Table: A Poker Playlist. It has plenty of Country music in it but not exclusively.
Permalink Reply by Vince Mounts on December 11, 2011 at 8:11am I've added a new one.
Americana #10 (Award Shows 2011) : Grammy nominees, Americana Music Awards nominees, and performers that appeared on the Austin City Limits episode covering the Americana Music Festival.
