I know this is way off topic here and I but does can anyone here recommend some quintessential Fado recordings? I recently spent some time crawling around Lisbon's back alley's listening to some Fado in the clubs...and by standing outside in the alleys...but really my knowledge of it is zero. And as far as recordings go I know even less.

I acknowledge that she is oft criticized, but Mariza has been responsible for the huge resurgence of interest in the genre and if you ever get the chance to see her live you will see why! She is sublime in concert. My personal favourite album of hers is "Fado Em Mim" from 2001.
Other favourites of mine are Deolinda, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qxv9s3PTIzY
Misia, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WN2Ib_SmteI
And finally, a lovely clip of Cristina Branco: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yejaUUBqtr0
Good luck, there's a whole world of fado to discover!
