I've been getting into this music more and more, and I would sure like to have a radio station to listen to. For example, iTunes lists dozens of stations, but I'm not sure which is appropriate.

Can anybody suggest a station I can find online, so that I can listen at work?

Try Jango.... you can select your own artists and create playlists etc. Really good and not interupted by ads every few minutes.
KDHX 88.1 in St. Louis. If you don't live near enough to pull in their signal, they stream at kdhx.org

KDHX is very eclectic but you will find a lot to like, it's a community funded station and among the best I've ever heard.
Radiotime.com Every radio station in the world that streams on the internet! Search by genre, format, country etc. Create and store your own presets. Have fun!

KEXP is best for this on Thursday nights, 6-9 (Pacific) for Swinging Doors which is a decent mix of older familiar country, modern classic country acts, and alt-country.

There's also the Roadhouse on Wednesday nights 6-9 which is largely all kinds of blues and American, etc.
WDST.com in Woodstock NY and/or KPIG.com in Monterey CA.
Sadly, kpig went behind a paywall recently. RIP PIG! That was my morning listening for years....
You know....I did hear that. It's an interesting strategy. They're probably just trying to offset the cost of bandwidth which for a station like KPIG is pretty substantial. I always noticed that they never sold their gateway ads which are the biggest revenue generators for streaming stations.
WWOZ.org out of New Orleans
If you are going to listen on itunes check out Boot Liquor under country.
Boot Liquor has turned me to quite a few new artists. Listen to it at work sometimes. I second the recommendation.
