Kevin Oliver (a fellow Columbia, SC resident) just did a recent blog post letting the No Depression community know about Zach and the Red Wagon, a great alt. country band that doesn't really get outside of SC much/at all. I thought it would be cool if people would share some of their super-local alt. country bands that have great songs but aren't really on the national scene. Here in Columbia we have...

Zach and the Red Wagon
American Gun
Josh Roberts & the Hinges
The Daylight Hours
Sunshone Still
Devils in Disguise
Hannah Miller

and, of course, Danielle Howle (which some of you might know)

also, a couple of Charleston songwriters I love...

Mac Leaphart
Cary Ann Hearst

That's is one of the smartest things I've ever heard a true music fan say.
Great post Kyla.

Last Saturday I was at a local bluegrass festival and discovered Claire Lynch. I couldn't believe that she's put out six CD's (a few on Rounder) and I simply missed her. I was actually going to blog on how stupid I felt....but now I don't have to. Thanks.

By the way....here's a link to her website:

Amen to that, for sure! I'm not really ashamed, just surprised I keep missing them! :)
I've noticed a lot of stuff I've picked up on recently comes out of Oregon eg Dolorean and Rachel Harrington.

Is Jesse Sykes still in Seattle. I saw her a few years ago in Eastern England and was hugely impressed. Since then she's managed to time her London shows when I am out of town.
Duh yes!! Jesse is another amazing Seattle artist I totally forgot to mention and she's also one of my good friends which makes it even worse that I left her off my list! Phil Wandscher who was the guitar player in Whiskeytown is also in the band.

Boston has a lot, but some of my favorites are-
Dearborn Valley
Mike MacDonald and the Widow Makers
Sessions Americana
Dennis Brennan
John Cate
The Bee's Knees (nothing wrong with a little shameless self promotion!)
Thanks for the shout-outs to some deserving locals, Kyle. If any of you have back issues of ND, you'll find record reviews or other pieces by me or other writers on American Gun, Sunshone Still, and Danielle Howle (multiple times). Tried to get something in about Josh Roberts a couple times but never did, one of my bigger regrets as far as what local/regional stuff I never got to cover for ND. Roberts' live shows the past year have been phenomenal, cathartic country-rock juggernauts, well worth your time if he's in your neck of the woods.
savannah, ga- The Train Wrecks, these guys kick up a mean storm of alt. country (Old 97's, Lucero).....Jason Bible pens some cool originals, but check out these covers on the debut

"The Ghost of Tom Joad"
"No Depression"
"Jet Pilot"- (Dylan)
