July 1-8 ND Listening Club Pick: Gillian Welch 'Time (The Revelator)'

Okay folks, this week we're revisiting Gillian Welch's Time (The Revelator). It was suggested by @WhiskeyT and seemed like a timely pick, considering Gillian will be headlining our little No Depression Festival next weekend. So, dig it out - or go pick it up, or download it if you don't have it already - and tell us what you think.

This is one of my favorite GW songs, and when done live Dave's solos are amazing! It's song like this and "Everything is Free Now" that made me a fan.
I feel like this is the least accessible of her albums. Call me a simpleton, but I usually am more of a fan of songs with a catchy melody, something I don't think these songs have. That being said, I've listened to this album over and over again. If it was possible to wear out mp3's, I would have done it with this album. It's really cohesive in terms of it's imagery (John Henry, Abe Lincoln, the Okies, the titanic, etc.) but at the same time elusive in it's meaning. It's not the kind of album you can have playing in the background while you're doing other things because it takes so much of your brain power just to scratch at the surface of the song meanings. I still haven't figured them out, and I don't know if I want to. The not understanding keeps me going back for more. Each listen brings a new discovery.
This is really a watershed album for me. I was really turned onto the whole alt-country scene just a few years before this album came out and felt like I had stayed too long at an all-you-can-eat buffet. When GW and DR released this I felt an immediate connection and it had a way of crystallizing all those phrases and tones from the stuff I had been listening to before. "Time" feels like a slow, thoughtful introduction to a story that is still being written by other artists. And who else can make the f-word sound so appropriate and not the least bit controversial?
One of my all-time/Top 10 favourite albums. Really classy songwriting and awesome musicianship. Happily I've seen GW/DR play twice now and they have been excellent on both occasions.

But where, oh where is the new album???
