I think Jason Isbell's debut was like #1 on the reader's poll in 2007. What's everyone think of the new album/direction?

I've only spun the new disc a few times, but it has quite a few tunes that I'd like to hear again. "Sirens of the Ditch" really grew on me and I have a feeling this one will too. Lyrically he's still top notch, but the hooks are a little slower to seep in, which can sometimes be a very good thing. He's definetly pushing himself and exploring different avenues. For the most part the new album is fairly midtempo. So I was pleasantly surprised at how hard they rocked The Southgate House a few weeks back. The 400 Unit did the Truckers tunes justice. "Never Gonna Change" absolutely killed.
I didn't care for the newest release and only liked two or three songs from "Sirens..." Dress Blues is fantastic but to find that level of excellence you need to go to his work with the DBT. Still a solid live act though.
I think it's a great album, got myself the double vinyl (fantastic artwork too), the music is quality, very much a step away from the DBT sound and a definite step up from Sirens of the Ditch in terms of the writing and production , a lovely blend of styles, really enjoying the more soulful sound, the album has fast become a favourite of mine and will no doubt figure in any "best of 09".
Would be great to see Jason and the band this side of the big pond.
The new disc is great. I actually like it more than "Sirens of the Ditch."
Was really disappointed on on first listen - none of the songs seemed to have the "wow" factor that Jason's best work does. It's grown on me quite a bit, though I still don't think it's as good as Sirens. I keep coming back to it, so there's still room...
Love it. I am excited to watch Jason continue to develop as an artist. I think he is a tremendous talent. One criticism I've heard is that he doesn't showcase his guitar chops much on this album. I'm still trying to figure out if I agree with that, or not. Seven Mile Island is an instant classic.
'Sirens of the Ditch' took one listen and it was on my top 5 of the year. This one took a few listens to grow on me, but, in a different way, it's also a favorite. More laid-back, obviously but i think the lyrics are stronger.
I love this record. Its one of those that just keeps getting better the more you listen to it. I would rate it pretty much equal to Sirens, just different. It's a little more consistent in style. I saw him at an in-store at SXSW and they rocked it live! "Good", "Cigarettes and Wine" and "However Long" are a few of my favorites.
I like it too...it's a bit uneven and I'm not sure if I like it overall as much as Sirens but it's pretty solid. I like 7 Mile Island quite a bit and the one later in the record..."Blue" something, don't remember the exact title. Fun band live when they were on the Sirens tour.
