Happy Hanukkah!
We've got forum threads going about favorite Christmas songs and albums but nothing that I can find for Hanukkah. What Hanukkah songs can you think of?
Here's an excerpt of a great article that Kurt Reighley wrote for No Depression back in 2008. Check it out:
Kickin' Chanukah music, old-school style
Without Jews, there would be no Christmas music.
Well, that’s an exaggeration. But the Chosen People have done much to advance the cause. The best-selling single of all time, Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas”, was composed by Irving Berlin. Over the years, Bette Midler, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, and Barry Manilow have all cashed in on their pop stardom and recorded Christmas albums, regardless of their heritage.
As a longtime connoisseur of Christmas music (and a research assistant on the biography Irving Berlin: A Daughter’s Memoir), I’m well-versed in this little bit of irony. But for many years I’ve wondered, “Where is all the Chanukah music?” In all my years of digging through dusty crates labeled “Holiday,” why have I never stumbled across a second-hand album that depicted the Barry Sisters lighting a menorah on its sleeve? .....This is an excerpt but the whole thing is great so check it out!

Above is my fave song regarding this. It's not really a Chanukkah song but it's written about how we (well just me probably) feel during the holidays!
Meant to be funny!
hope you all like it!

Above is a Tom Lehrer classic - Hanukkah in Santa Monica. Sadly, the Tom Lehrer version cannot be embedded.I am not fond of the traditional Hanuka or the new creations, although I hope others will post some of them. I do make an exception for Adam Sandler's Hanukkah Song. Apparently, a whole bunch of folks in Chicago liked it too.
Kyla, Thanks for this post. I'll be interested to see if I can learn about some quality Hanukkah songs I don't yet know. and Merry Christmas to you and those who celebrate that holiday. Happy Hanukkah to the members of the tribe.

Permalink Reply by Viola on December 21, 2011 at 11:08am There are two that have been stuck in my head this year. First, the Colbert/Stewart song, "Can I Interest You in Hanukkah?":

And then, a funny song by Shwa Losben called "All I Want For Chanukah (is Hookers and Blow)":

Sure, neither song is a classic (yet), but heck. I take what I can get. Someone pass the latkes and bourbon, k?
Permalink Reply by Henry Jasen on December 21, 2011 at 11:49am Thanks Laura and Viola. You made my holiday. The Colbert-Stewart song even deals with the holiday. There is hope foe Jewish solstice culture after all.
Permalink Reply by Becky Schenker on December 21, 2011 at 12:35pm Julie Silver's got a nice album of standards.
Permalink Reply by Stina on December 21, 2011 at 4:30pm Adam Sandler's song was the first to come to mind. I now have it stuck in my head... thanks. :( LOL. Listening to RA's "Ashes and Fire" (live version on Letterman) so now have a weird hybrid mixed with that delightful holiday classic... ;P

This was really popular last year, they even performed at The White House and on the NYC morning talk shows. I like that it's upbeat and pop. Becky, I used to work with Julie Silver in MA many years ago, I still have a couple of her cds.
