What's your favorite Americana album that most never discovered?  My first nomination is "Seventeen" by The Samples.  A wonderful acoustic live album full of luscious melodies and heartfelt vocals.  Perfect for long drives.  Highly recommended.   Here are several "samples" - no pun intended.

James McCandless' two albums "Out West Somewhere" and "Sea of Freedom." Overlooked songwriter from the Chicago area. Both are on Andrew Calhoun's Waterbug label.

From the UK little known and now disbanded 'The Endrick Bros'.

I recently picked up an early Norman (and Nancy) Blake  record called "The Fields of November"..So smooth, sweet and mid-tempo...with truly world-class talent on all instruments.

This is what American music is all about for me.

Fraser & DeBolt (with Ian Gunther) , perhaps not as obscure in Canada where they were based? 2 guitars & a fiddle stretching the definitions of "folk" music... heard it described as acid folk, but it doesn't feel self conscious but very sincere.

They released a second album with electronic instruments later, that's pretty good as well, in a hippie folk rock kind of way.

The band Suddenly Tammy - the wonderful trio from Pennsylvania who released a brilliant album in 1995 (We Get There When We Do) but never came close to that glory again.

Both of Rose's Pawn Shop's albums The Arsonist and Dancing on the Gallows are great. Check them out playing The Arsonist live:

I can think of many but for right now I'll go with these three (two relative oldies and one of newer vintage):

The Unforgiven -" The Unforgiven"    L.A. based band that produced this album which may be a little heavy on strident anthems but I still love it, particularly the song "With My Boots On"

The Del-Lords - "Based On A True Story"  It can be argued that the Del-Lords were not Americana but I believe they were headed in that direction with this album.  Scott Kempner's "Cheyenne" is the highlight of  an album of great songs.

Sugar + The Hi-Lows - "Sugar + The Hi-Lows"  This is the newcomer of my choices.  I find something more I like every time I play it.  Give yourself a smile and listen to this one.  Particular attention to "This Can't Be The Last Time".
