I'm not sure how I found their music, but I recently stumbled upon the music of this incredibly talented young duo (two sisters ages 18 and 20). They call themselves First Aid Kit. I downloaded their 2011 album "The Big Black and The Blue" a few days ago and was blown away by the glorious harmonies and excellent songwriting that belie their young ages. Last night I downloaded their new album "The Lion's Roar" off of iTunes and it's also marvelous - sort of cross between Fleet Foxes, Simon & Garfunkel, Jayhawks, and Indigo Girls. Highly, highly recommended. Here are some clips including their performance at a Patti Smith award ceremony that brought Patti to tears (in a good way). :)

Sll I can say is that I was blown away. Beautiful harmonies and great songs. I will definitely be downloading The Lion's Roar this week.

I agree. "The Lion's Roar" is marvelous. "Emmylou" is incredibly catchy and songs like "To A Poet", "New Year's Eve", and "Dance To Another Tune" are shockingly powerful. It is amazing that artists of such a young age can write songs of such elegance and maturity.
Permalink Reply by Kyla Fairchild on January 19, 2012 at 11:14am First Aid Kit are fantastic! Their last album "The Big Black and the Blue" was on my top 10 list for 2010. I've seen them live and they are great in that setting also. Looking forward to checking out the new album.
Permalink Reply by Kyla Fairchild on January 20, 2012 at 2:25pm I went to a coffee shop to work for a bit right after I posted this comment and video yesterday and guess who was playing when I walked in the door?! First Aid Kit! I'd never heard their music played out anywhere before so it was really great to hear.

Permalink Reply by Peter Thompson on January 20, 2012 at 2:05pm saw First Aid Kit in Norwich England a couple of years ago they are great live --they really love Gram Parsons .
The new First Aid Kit album "Lion's Roar" is the best album I've heard since The Avett Brother's 2009 album "I And Love And You". I've listened to the album three times now and it is shockingly good.

This is from January 24, 2012 in London at Rough Trade East. Great live performance of "Emmylou" that sounds as remarkable as the studio version. Harmonies like this are so rare.
