When it comes to lists of favorite singer-songwriters, it's easy to fill the list with Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, etc. But how about your favorite singer-songwriter that doesn't fill arenas or amphitheaters? Give us your favorite 3-5 singer-songwriters that you can still see in intimate clubs. Mine are:

Cory Branan

Micah Schnabel and Shane Sweeney (Two Cow Garage)

Brent Best (Slobberbone, The Drams)

Nice choices  but let's get a little farther "off the beaten path":

Michael Rank

Ronnie Fauss

Austin Collins

Shake Russell

John Howie Jr.

Danny George Wilson

Justin Currie

Micah Schnabel and Shane Sweeney are both definitely on my list. I'd also add:

Will Johnson (Centro-Matic/South San Gabriel/Monsters of Folk)
Joey Kneiser (Glossary)
Kasey Anderson

I have found these three wonderful talents :

Cruz Contreras of Black Lillies.  Cruz writes most of their fine songs

Andrew Marlin who is one half of Mandolin Orange.

Jill Andrews, formerly of the everybodyfields, now out on her own.

Hadn't checked this discussion for awhile, and am so excited to see all the new suggestions.  Marva, you're right - Cruz Contreras does super work - we are big Black Lillies fans.

Two more suggestions :  Elephant Revival from Colorado - uncategorizable, but they'll leave you speechless.  (their recordings don't really capture their brilliance.)

I Draw Slow (from Ireland) - Irish Newgrass?  You bet - fun, energetic, delightful.  Check out their album Redhills.

Both groups brought the house down at the fall Albino Skunk Festival this past October.  Best festival EVER.

I have to add:

Banjo Joe McCamish (Whistle Pigs)

Reverend Deadeye.

Check out Milton...really good

Someone previously mentioned Alex McMurray out of New Orleans, so I gotta add another NOLA staple,

Paul Sanchez.  Check out this Exit to Mystery Street, which was my No.1 fave album a couple years ago.

Is Darden Smith still playing gigs? I saw him dozens of time back in my Austin days-- always enjoyable.

And what happened to his old pal, Elliot Rogers. I saw him in a pure blue grass band some years ago at Chamizal, here in El Paso. Last heard he and Janice were calling Santa Fe home. All three of these guys used to play around Austin as The Ramblers. Hell of a blues-grassy Americana band!

First Aid Kit, Tara Linda and Ana Brun.

First Aid Kit just been tweeting how happy they are that Emmylou Harris has heard their song "Emmylou' ! Well done girls !

Ps their album from this year is briliant !

You might try Ed Askew...I knew him a century or two ago in New Haven, when he wrote and recorded a beautiful song called "Mr. Dream,'' about the Kennedy assassination; just looked around and he's still doing lovely stuff...This is a recent example; it's instrumental, but there are other examples of his work worth hearing;
