Ten Old :
Safe At Home - INTERNATIONAL SUBMARINE BAND
Sweetheart Of The rodeo- THE BYRDS
Gilded Palace Of Sin - FLYING BURRITO BROS
California Bloodlines - JOHN STEWART
Uncle charlie And His Dog Teddy - NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND
Honky Tonk Heroes - WAYLON JENNINGS
Shotgun Willie - WILLIE NELSON
Geronimos Cadillac - MICHAEL MARTIN MURPHY
Blood On The Tracks - BOB DYLAN
On The Beach - NEIL YOUNG

Ten that ., for me , stand the test of time and define the emerging Americana/Alt, Country scene....
the DILLARD /CLARK EXPERIENCE and MICHAEL NESMITH would also be there (in a longer list !)

Jeez ......Kristofferson , Townes , Guy Clark , Flatlanders , Great Speckled Bird.......it's impossible , WHY DID YOU MAKE ME START !
My problem is drawing the line between what's alt-country and what's not. If you take it to mean "anything but Nashville" then that opens up the door to the outlaws, bluegrass, etc. But most on this list should like the following:

Toni Price - Low Down and Up
Shelby Lynne - I Am Shelby Lynne
Carlene Carter - Blue Nun
David Bromberg - Try Me One More Time
Skeeter Davis and NRBQ - She Sings, They Play
Hot Club of Cowtown - Ghost Train
Kristofferson - Silver Toungued Devil
Eliza Gylkison - Beautiful World
Nickel Creek - Why Should the Fire Die
Kim Richey - Glimmer
Resentments - Sunday Night Lineup

I guess Rhonda Vincent is too bluegrass and not enough "alt" but I sure like her albums.
Patty Loveless may be too mainstream but she sure is great - check out both Mountain Soul albums.
havent seen Fred Eaglesmith mentioned yet...the Live and Milleys Cafe or fav's....also the Gourds and anything Townes...
Lipstick , Lies & Gasoline - an all-time classic.

Looking thru my listt:

Carla Bozulich - Red Headed Stranger

Catherine Irwin (from Freakwater) - Cut yourself a Switch

Crooked Fingers - Red Devil Dawn

Dex Romweber Duo - Ruins of Berlin

Levon Helm - Dirt Farmer

Martha Scanlan - The West was Burning

Mary Lou Lord - Baby Blue

Milton Mapes - The Blacklight Trap

Matt Mays and El Torpedo - self titled

Porter Hall Tennesse - All Sinners Welcome Here

Scott H Biram - Somethings Wrong/Lost Forever

Sixteen Horsepower - Secret South

Trailer Bride - High Seas

Uncle Tupelo - 89/93 An Anthology

New One Cha ChaCha Fred Eaglesmith
