That's a great list though I don't think I'd be able to restrict myself to 10.......I'd need room for Sparklehorse, Josh Rouse, Neil Young, Ryan Adams, Kathleen Edwards and Elvis Costello.....and the wonderful Jim White.
Having just joined this site, I came across this thread which is superb to read through, lots of what I would expect and some new stuff I will certainly be having a listen to.
I started back in 2000 with an album I liked the cover of in my local library, so I borrowed it and was bowled over, it being
1/ Jayhawks-" smile" I was hooked, but didnt really know what I was listening to, I just liked it , a lot. Fast forward to 2003 , met my current girlfriend and she bought me ......
2/ Ryan Adams-"Gold", I was now seriously hooked on the sound and can't get enough, so my list goes from here on in....
3/ Grayson Capps- "Stavin Chain"
4/ Any Richmond Fontaine album (seeing them on thursday as they are over here in the Uk touring)
5/Son Volt-"Trace" (but then again they can do no wrong in my ears)
6/Cowboy Junkies-"The Caution Horses"
7/ Hem-"Eveningland"
8/Ann McCue-"Roll"
9/Wilco-" A Ghost Is Born"
10/ James McMurty-"Too Long In The Wasteland.
There are of course dozens more, in fact making this list has made me realise what an almost impossible task it is-I reserve the right to change my mind by tomorrow!!
Of god left out Steve Earle, Todd Snider, The Men They Couldn't Hang, Uncle Tupelo,Ryan Bingham, Bonnie Prince Billy, Johnny Cash ......................................and...............................................................
I'm the last person you should ask such a question; you get enough of these lists you fairly define a genre, and I've never been all that picky about borders.

Walk On John Hiatt
I'm a little surprised there was more love upthread for Bring The Family; I consider this his masterpiece. The A&M Years is a great collection, too.

Lucinda Williams- Well, pretty much anything; her voice makes my pants feel too tight.

What, no love for The Derailers? guess they haven't made a great album, yet.

Emmylou-if she knew how much I'd pay to hear her sing the phone book, it's probably a good thing I don't have that kinda money.

La Pistola Y El Corazon Los Lobos but just about any Los Lobos record could make the list

Home Dixie Chicks Don't know if it's Americana, but it sure ain't mainstream country, and it's also one of the best records ever made, period.

Dwight Live Dwight Yoakum

Honky Tonk Masquerade Joe Ely

Hobo's Lullabye Arlo Guthrie Arlo mighta been the first guy to play Americana, as it's currently defined, though there's certainly lotsa stuff from before him that fits the category.
mojobone, thank you for giving big love to the Dixie Chicks. I've often felt like they don't get recognition in the Americana arena because they've had so much success but it was clear from the start that these girls can play, sing and the most important thing for me is that in the early going they picked GREAT songs by amazing songwriters. Covering Patty Griffin, Radney Foster, Maia Sharp, Maria McKee, Bruce Robison ,established a good start and finding their own voice and showing songwriting chops should keep them in good stead for a long time to come.
I think they probably don't get enough respect from the Americana community cause they sort of sold out for a little while.

That said even there commercial records were tons better than the usual crap you hear on Country radio,
What about the absolutely awesome CLEM SNIDE???? I saw them at St Bonaventures in Bristol a couple of years back and they are stunning live plus their body of work is fabulous....check them out!
