I'm not sure what 'alt' really means, and there are a lot of artists listed in the posts that I've never even heard of. Anyway, a few of my favourite albums, that I've bought over the last year or so, might qualify? These are :

Richard Shindell - South of Delia
Slaid Cleaves - Broke Down
Jeffrey Foucault - Ghost Repeater
Brandi Carlile - The Story
Ray Bonneville - Gust of Wind
John Gorka - Jack's Crows

........... Colin.

Kasey Chambers' first two solo albums were great Americana, if that's what you can still call it when it's an Aussie artist.

The Captain
Barricades and Brick Walls

And I also like her earlier stuff with the Dead Ringer Band - 'We're All Gonna Die Someday' is a classic.

I figured I'd add my top ten to this:
El Corazon Steve Earle
Being There Wilco
GP Gram Parsons
Los Super 7 Los Super 7 (the first one)
Car Wheels...... Lucinda Williams
Letter to Laredo Joe Ely
More a Legend...... The Flatlanders (in fact, got this one on vinyl, Charly issue from the 80s)
Dublin Blues Guy Clark
Gringo Honeymoon Robert Earl Keen Jr (title song brings back memories of a trip to Boqilla del Carmen, when you use to be able to row over the Rio Grande del Norte)
Green on Red Green on Red

I don't know, but it seems to me that this whole thing dates back a long time before Uncle Tupelo.
