Well i've thought about this for a few weeks as it's a hard set of boundaries to draw and there's the impact that various records had to consider but here's my 5
American Beauty - GD my road into Americana & the rest
Grievous Angel - GP - had it since a few months of its release and it's a rare month when it doesn't get a play. Still sounds as fresh as ever.
Will the Circle Be Unbroken - NGDB where I heard a lot of old time players for the 1st time
Native Sons - The Long Ryders - jangly guitars, harmonies, where did this come from in the mid 1980s?
Hot Rail - Calexico soundtrack to the desert; without this no Marais La Nuit :)
Hello,

I got my start with The Byrds "SweetHearts of the Rodeo" Album (great steel guitar work from Mr. Lloyd Greene)
then Son Volt "Trace"
Flying Burrito Brothers with Sneaky Pete on the steel guitar ahhhh good stuff
Dickie Betts "Highway Call" is amazing.... I picked up a vinyl copy of this recently for 4 bucks...
Gillian Welch and David Rawling - "Revival"
The Band - "music from Big pink" "The Last Waltz"
Not much representation from the good old UK yet; just thought I would push the boundaries back and toss my hat into the ring with the following:
The Rockingbirds - The Rockingbirds
Grand Drive - Road Music
Broken Family Band - Balls
Endrick Brothers - Built to last
The Arlenes - Stuck on love
Jason Walker - Stranger to someone

OK I admit it; it's a fair cop guv. The last artist is an Aussie but it is still one of my favoutite albums by a non American. To all out there, you really do need to check out the Rockingbirds!
Thanks Richard. One thing we don't get much exposure to across the pond are the English/European / Australian artists. Appreciate the list. Gives me much more to check out. And I'd add another great ex-pat Aussie to the bunch, Anne McCue. Her latest "East of Electric" is a truly great piece of work.
Many thanks for the tip regarding Anne McCue - I've had a listen on Myspace and I quite like what I hear.
Just wondering if you have any news on Jason Walker. I loved Stranger to Someone and quite enjoyed his CD with the Last Drinks (can't remember the title). I think in the UK I was single handedly keeping the man in business as I also managed to get my hands on his book about Gram. Admittedly it only cost me £3 as I found it in HMV's bargain bin.
I look forward to receiving more Aussie tips. I did buy an album by Emily Barker (I think she is an Aussie) last year however it wasn't quite my cup of tea.
If you like your old style country soul (why do we attempt to categorise?) you may care to check out Pete Molinari - A Virtual Landslide.
What a veritable feast of music included in these 'best of' lists, which I have just caught up with. Although I'm British I like the term Americana since you can incorporate virtually any kind of music. I find it impossible to limit my favourites to just 5 or 10 or even 20 but here goes with a selection off the top of my head (sorry, no British artists in the list as I can't think of any that are anywhere near as good as those that make up the following collection, which are in no specific order of merit but which are constantly on the CD player or the iPod):

Jayhawks - Rainy Day Music
Last Train Home - Last Good Kiss
Thad Cockrell - Warmth and Beauty
Gram Parson - Grievous Angel
Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker
Jorma Kaukonen - Blue Country Heart
Shawn Mullins - Beneath the Velvet Sun
Steve Earle/Del |McCoury Band- The Mountain
Irene Kelley - Simple Path
Jerry Douglas, Russ Barenberg and Edgar Meyer - Skip Hop and Wobble
Kasey Chambers - Barricades and Brickwalls
Cross Canadian Ragweed - Mission California
Paul Kelly - Ways and Means
Emmylou Harris - Pieces of the Sky
Neal Casal - Leaving Traces
Kelly Willis - Kelly Willis
Kim Richey - Kim Richey
Mavericks - From Here to Paradise
Pinmonkey - Big Shiny Cars
off the top of my head...
Wilco- Being There
Son Volt- Trace
the Jayhawks- Tomorrow the Green Grass
Whiskeytown- Faithless Street
The Band- Big Pink
Neil Young- Harvest
Ron Sexsmith- Blue Boy
Tift Merritt- Tamborine
the Be Good Tanyas- Blue Horse
Billy Bragg & Wilco- Mermaid Avenue 1&2
Corey Chisel and the Wandering Sons- Cabin Ghosts
Vetiver- To Find Me Gone
oh, also...
Neil Young- Silver & Gold
Neil Young- Prarie Wind.
Love Neil Young, what about the little known "Old Way's" from the eighties. Neil is joined by outlaws Willie and Waylon and shows his skill in the traditional [ as much as you could expect] country genre. Check out the song " One of These Days" a beautiful tribute to friends and fellow performers.
loomer songs of the wild west island
