People often ask how to embed videos in comments and blogs.  It's quite simple once you know how.

Find the video you want to embed on You Tube and click the "Share" button. That opens up a page where you'll see a box that says "Embed", click on that.  You'll see a page as in the screen shot below.

Select what size you want the embedded video to be (I usually choose 480 x 390 - or whatever the second option is).  Next copy that code and then come back to the No Depression site and click on the media icon that looks like a tiny film strip.  The icon can be found in the tools at the top of the comment box or blog box to the right of the word "add:".

When you click the icon a box will pop up and you paste the code there and then click OK and the video will appear in your comment or blog post.

To add a video in the video section of the site go to the video page and click on the +ADD button in the upper right corner. Look for the box with the You Tube and Vimeo logos and below them you'll see a link that says "or embed videos from other services".  Click on that link and a box will open up and you paste the embed code there.  Click on the box that says "add video" and that adds the video to the site for moderator approval and also takes you to a page where you can edit the title and description of the video and add tags. Once you have that as you wish click "save" at the bottom of the page.

A portion of the video description will automatically be imported from You Tube. If the full description isn't showing up and you want it included with your video then go back to the You Tube page and close the box with the embed information. Once that box is gone you can see the video description text again. If the full text isn't showing click on the "show more" link under the description and the full description will appear. You can then copy and paste that in the description field for the video you are posting in the video section here.

oh sweet, I've always wondered how to do this, thanks :)

Thanks Kyla,

I don't know how many times I've screwed this up because it works the other way on Facebook and I forget which is which.

Thanks for that Kyla,

Can I link to this post at our work wiki: I'm helping my colleagues get WEB2 savvy and embedding videos is a wonderful way to share what you've discovered on the net or even upload what you've produced on your Flip or iphone to a wiki/ ning.

BTW I just loved Nina Simone's performance of Love me or leave me.

Very excited about the depth and breadth of what is here at the NoDepression ning. I'm a member of a small ning for teachers developing and sharing skills in e-learning but it is quite small still.

regards, Jill

Hi Jill-

Welcome to the site!  Sure, no problem if you want to link to this.

Kyla

Can anyone tell me why an embedded video is showing up in my blog post, but then when I go to preview it before I publish it, it just comes up as a big blank space?  Will it show up when I go to publish, or not?
Hi Dana, not sure why but sometimes videos don't show up in the preview but do when published. It should show up when you publish the blog.

Hi Kyla-Thanks for the help. The problem I had is when I copied the you tube and tried to paste it over on this site- it asked if I knew everything on my clip board(whatever that is) would be included-so I didn't paste it. And the vidoe I tried to transfer from the Vimeo site you recommended came across as a streaming song? I welcome further suggestions.

Take Care,Mary

Hi Mary-  I've never had that happen so I'm not sure what to tell you. I would choose another video and try again. Follow the steps as noted above and see if it works this time. If not, let me know and I'll try to help figure out what's going on.

Very Helpful- step by step and pictures too for visual learners like me-- Thanks
