I've never listened to Patty Griffin before, but I just bought four of her albums at the same time and just started playing through them all: Living With Ghosts, Flaming Red, 1,000 Kisses, Children Running Through... and right now I'm dazed and confused by the sheer awesomeness of her work. (I was born in California so I can use "sheer awesomeness" with impunity). I'm just blown away and have barely begun to register it all yet. Her voice, the perfection of the subtleties to her singing across multiple different styles, the songwriting, the flawless production... wow!

Some time ago I put together a whole long list of artists from one of the recommendation threads that was going on this website, and Patty Griffin wasn't mentioned even once (out of 120 artists, some of whom were recommended more than 20 times each). How can this be? She kind of reminds me a bit of Shelby Lynne and Michelle Shocked (two of my favorites) sometimes, though that's only a small part of what I'm hearing.

So anyway I was wondering what do you all think of Patty Griffin? And how have I missed out on her all this time? Is my first impression wrong, will her work fall flat after a few listens? Shoot who else with this kind of talent am I still missing??

Love, love, LOVE Patty Griffin!!!   She is incredible!!   Her voice just blows me away and her songwriting is just as good.

You will never get tired of listening to her.    Just today I had "Living With Ghosts" playing on the way to work - I'm surprised I haven't worn that CD out by now.

If  you get the chance to see her live - GO!!!   You will not be disappointed.

I think she is better rocker than folk singer too (or at least was)....I would like to hear her rock version of "living with ghosts" that she did originally.
Patty Griffin is wonderful. She was first recommended to me about six years ago and I bought her "Living With Ghosts." I have to say, I didn't get her at first. Her voice is somewhat unusual. I also detect some distortion on that recording which may have affected my initial reaction. I would pull it out now and then, but never really appreciated it. Not until one day when I put it on repeat and just let it play over and over as I went about the house doing some chores. One or two songs started to sink in, so I gave it another listen and Patty finally registered with me. I went out to buy "Flaming Red" and was amazed that it was the same artist. She has such range! Now I snap up every new recording and once had the pleasure of seeing her live (in Seattle at the Moore Theater; the "Children Running Through" tour). She is a great songwriter, as the various covers of her work by other artists attests, and a terrific singer. The voice is different. It seems small but has great power and flexibility. I think she's a major talent. Rosanne Cash once mentioned possibly collaborating with her on a song. Wouldn't that be great!
Just wait til you get to Downtown Church.

Patty if utterly brilliant and my favorite female singer-songwriter.  All the albums you mentioned are amazing as are Silver Bell (never officially released by available on the web) and Impossible Dream.   Patty is currently recording a new album for release later this year (hopefully). Also, those who love Patty will also likely love Lori McKenna's latest album Lorraine which sounds very similar to 1000 Kisses or Living With Ghosts.

Did her and Robert Plant get married?

That's the rumor.  Not confirmed by Plant or Griffin but some have reported that they're telling friends that they got married a few months ago.

Patty Griffin is one of my favorite songwriters in the world. Hands down, one of the finest living songwriters. I agree with the statement that you should go see her live. The songs don't get old. Keep listening. She's my go-to artist when I'm not sure what I'm in the mood to listen to. Always beautiful stuff.

Listening to her amazing song "Mother of God" and thinking this morning how many years it's been since we had a studio album of original material from Patty Griffin.  We miss you Patty!!!

patty griffin to me defines all that is right about good music and excellent song writing. she has never put out a weak album,so all her releases are worth picking up. believe it or not her best album you can't buy because of label issues. watch for her "silver bell " album out there on the internet.it is a personal favorite of mine. wait until you see her live! i will list more artists you may be interested in as soon as i have more time. it only gets better enjoy!

I have all of Patty's records (including the not officially released Silver Bell) and completely agree that they are all excellent. My favorite is probably 1000 Kisses or Impossible Dream.  I've seen her live many times including back in Boston in the mid-90's before her first album was released.  She only had about five or so songs to play at that time. After I heard "I Write The Book", I was hooked.  She is amazing live and amazing in the studio. Can't wait for the new studio album. I see that she's recording the new album for release later this year (hopefully).

i guess people miss out on patty because she is not mainstream music, which is a good thing. so unless you follow americana music or are lucky enough to read something about her chances are you'd miss her. i think you will find her songs hold up well with repeated listening. other artists you may want to check out would be: rachel harrington, caroline herring, adam carroll -audrey auld, robyn ludwick, carrie elkin cary ann hearst and michael trent, devon sproule, diana jones, eilen jewell, eliza gilkyson, emily jane white, jamie wilson, buddy and julie miller, the mastersons, paul kelly, kasey chambers, peter case, pieta brown, richard shindell rita hosking, thea gilmore, scott miller, shelley king, tara nevins, terri hendrix, tift merritt, todd snider, and willy mason. try those and there are many more other people will submit. good searching!
