Well as the 23rd anniversary of Blaze Foley's death passed I am amzed by how many people are only now discovering his wonderful music!
Blaze Foley's sister Marsha sent me a newly released (limited edition only 500 pressed) vinyl LP called "Clay Pigeons" and it is wonderful. I think this is the only time Blaze Foley has been put on vinyl and released officially....somehow that doesn't seem right but I guess it takes a while for people to catch on.
So there is an idea fueled by popular demand amongst Blaze Foley fans that Austin City Limits oughta honor this Austin TX legend properly with a tribute concert. Show his music some way overdue Love.
PS: I'm not a concert promoter and there's nothing in this for me I just Love the music and think it would be very cool!
If enough people agree I think it might raise some eyebrows over at ACL and they might consider it viable!
Blaze was never a commercial artist but I suspect many of you know his story already.

Permalink Reply by chris mccarter on February 20, 2012 at 5:10pm Sounds great but you forgot to mention the guy who knows Blaze's music best, Gurf Morlix. As a matter of fact Gurf has spent much of the past year promoting Blaze's documentary "Duct Tape Messiah". Kevin Triplett, the producer, spent 12 years on this project and did an incredible job. Each showing was followed by Gurf performing Blaze's music and telling great stories. His song "Music You Mighta Made" is a wonderful tribute to Blaze that every fan should hear.
My thoughts exactly, Chris!
Thanks all for the responses! I have to clarify that I myself just discovered Blaze Foley music and am becoming more familiar with all the incredible songs.
Kevin Triplett is actually the guy who said that ACL would never do this because they are too commercial oriented in artist choice. So my response was to focus on the big name major label artists to get ACL's attention.
I think Kevin is right though. ACL just aint gonna even consider doing something to honor Blaze Foley unless some major established artists like John Prine, Merle Haggard, Lyle Lovett, Lucinda Williams, Willie Nelson and Nanci Griffith are interested in doing this. I do like what Gurf Morlix is doing for keeping Blaze's music alive and I do think Gurf should definitely be included if this does happen. As I understand it he has some great stories to tell about Blaze. In fact gathering up all of Blaze's old bandmates to have them play too would be very cool. Kevin could even show clips from his documentary at the breaks.
But this is just a dream. Enough people have to get behind it for ACL to even take notice of the idea.
So far response has been poor. Only about 41 "Likes" on the post at ACL's Wall. Unless more people go there and Like and comment it's very likely this will just fade away and not be considered. Another alternative I suppose would be to approach the individual artists about the idea but I have no idea how to do that.
