Tom Russell

Katy Moffatt

Sylvia Tyson

Lyle Lovett
I'll strongly second Blue Rodeo (Diamond Mine came out in '89) and Rank and File. Lucinda Williams first widespread release (after the Folkways disc) came out in 1988, "Lucinda Williams" on Rough Trade. To me, that's still her best disc. The brilliant first Peter Case disc is '88.
There's also early Lyle Lovett.
What about X? Some of it is rock, but some on the Americana border.
I'll second Tom Russell. I saw his show a couple of times in Ithaca NY in the late eighties and he and his band were outstanding. I got signed vinyl!

Plus I don't see the Desert Rose Band on any of these lists. What a great collection of players.
Southern Culture On The Skids
R.E.M.
Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band
Grateful Dead--Reckoning
Guadalcanal Diary
The Connells
Let's Active
Early k.d. lang and Ricky Skaggs.

Anything from Mellencamp's Scarecrow and The Lonesome Jubilee.
I'll also agree with X and Lyle Lovett and add some Mojo Nixon.
Joe Ely "Live at Liberty Lunch". His best record ever. Hard to find.
I really like the album he did with the Clash, too.
Off the top of my head, some obvious some obscure.

Vulgar Boatmen
Hickoids
Tex And The Horseheads
Giant Sand
The Silos
Walkabouts
Mekons
Los Lobos
American Music Club
EIEIO
Great Plains
Tail Gators
Leroi Bros
Evan Johns & The H Bombs.
How did everybody else forget the Mekons?
Yeah, I was wondering about that myself? I checked several times to make sure I didn't miss it. Same with the Silos and Giant Sand.
