As most of you probably know, Dave Alvin spearheaded a tribute album for his good friend Chris Gaffney who passed away due to cancer in the past year. I had been meaning to check it out but was not in a big rush since I generally don't get too excited about tribute albums. Well I finally got my hands on a copy and checked it out over the weekend. . . wow. It is a really good CD on its own merits and everyone on it is on top of their game. Dave Alvin, Joe Ely, John Doe, the Iguanas, Los Lobos, Freddy Fender, etc.

If you were thinking about it, well it's definitely worth it.

Love it. I'm especially taken with Dave's version of "Artesia" (killer intro) and Alejandro Escovedo's version of "1968" (which is based on combining the quite different Alvin and Gaffney versions) ... and Jimmy Lauderdale's "Glass House" and John Doe's "Quiet Desperation" are show stoppers around here. I originally bought Gaffney's first solo CD because of his band name (The Cold Hard Facts) and was very pleasantly surprised. Somehow missed the Hacienda Bros. until after he'd left us....
PS I hope somebody puts together an equally wonderful Duane Jarvis tribute.
It really is a great CD - one of my faves. Love "Six Nights A Week," "Artesia," "King of the Blues" - all of 'em outstanding songs.

When I saw Dave Alvin & The Guilty Women a couple of weeks ago his first encore was "Man of Somebody's Dreams." He very understandably got a bit emotional introducing the song and talking about his friend Chris.
