I was recently in Austin and just happened upon a free open air gig featuring the wonderful Alejandro Escavdo. It got me thinking ... what is the best free gig you NDers have ever been privileged or just plain lucky enough to attend?

The Neville Brothers, Chicago, at Navy Pier, late 80's.

The Jayhawks, Chicago, at Grant Park, July 1993
...and John Lee Hooker at Penns Landing, Philadelphia, '91 or '92.

Fabulous Thunderbirds in Lodo - Denver in the late 1990s.  Kim Wilson and crew had the whole street rocking. It was oddly magical.

Also saw at Kenny Rogers at Fiddler's Green in Denver circa 1998. Good stuff.

Every June we have the Sage SummerTyne Americana Festival in Gateshead, NE England and it is free. We've had Otis Gibbs, Eve Selis, Elizabeth Cooke, Jame Hunter, Holmes Brothers, Pete Molinari, Handsome Family....the list goes on.

I don't know about the best one.  My memory isn't that good anymore.  But the last one was the Holmes Brothers Tuesday night outside City Winery in New York City.  The one before that was Sarah Jarosz in Verdi Park.  Both were excellent.  Johnny Rivers and Flo and Eddy (the Turtles) on the Fourth of July about 15 or 20 years ago in Myrtle Edwards Park overlooking Puget Sound in Seattle.  That was fabulous.
Last week  the BBC were recording one of Songwriters Circle shows in London featuring Leon Russell, Nick Lowe and Paul Brady performing in the round and I was lucky enough to get on the list.  That was pretty special.
Tie between Janis Ian in the plaza by the Twin Towers NYC summer of 2001 and Emmylou Harris that same 4th of July in Battery Park.
I just walked in the door from seeing Rodney Crowell and his band play an awesome free show at the Harbor Steps in Seattle as part of the "out to lunch concert series"!  He is so awesome!

Kyla,

I was there too. Expected a solo show. What a rocking band he had with him- a great performance!!
