Permalink Reply by Charley Dunlap on December 2, 2011 at 4:23pm I made this list with a bit of c0ntroversy in mind. What else could you do, fill it up with Britney Spears and Justin Biebers? Lou Reed has written a small handful of good songs over a 40 year career and an awful lot of dross. He is a minor figure compared to Ray Davies, Lennon-McCartney, Jagger Richards, Dylan ,of course, Leonard Cohen, Lucinda Williams, Neil Young and, I'm sure, more. This is abetted by the extent to which Lou Reed certainly disagrees; he is his own greatest fan.

Permalink Reply by Robert Pupp on December 15, 2011 at 11:27am Limiting it to alt-country acts (but it seems like a problem to me that if you think someone is overrated you stop listening to them, and don't know if they get better):
1). Lucinda Williams. Started off OK (though some maddeningly repetitive lyrics), but nothing much to the stuff I've heard since. Has some style--enough for the critics.
2). Wilco. I don't get it. Self-indulgent and without much substance. My sister used to like them cause she though Tweedy was cute, but from pictures of him I've seen she might not think that now.
3). Old Medicine Show. I went to the record store and bought every CD of theirs. Then couldn't figure a reason to listen more than 2 or 3 times.
4). I gotta say Steve Earle because ever since his brilliant early stuff he gives us 2 or 3 great songs a CD and the rest filler. And I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table and shout that to the spirit of Townes Van Zandt.
5). Not really alt-country, but since he dabbles in something like it: Bruce Springsteen. Lyrics have too many words. Embarrassingly uncool. I hear he can perform all night but I'm not dating him so I don't care.
Permalink Reply by Charley Dunlap on December 15, 2011 at 4:56pm Yes, good stuff. Lucinda I thought was pretty great — I like the Cobain-like repetetiveness and the blues simplicity — up until a couple of albums ago. But the rest, yes indeed.
