I have to add 1 Bonus, Alexander Ovechkin. Although he is not a musician, he is indeed an artist.
Ovechkin is pretty great. It is way too early to make this call (but that hasn't stopped many pundits) -maybe my Blackhawks will get a chance to play against the Caps in the finals

- never thought I'd see some NHL talk on the ND Forum ...
two out of six ain't bad: dylan and lucinda (c'mon- no bad? Sting? Krause is highly overrated, too "produced").
Gosh, not one mention of Patty Griffin. Well: Patty Griffin!
Don't forget Dylan's "born-again" period.
I don't think there are six that can do no wrong. Closest?

Beatles
Steve Earle (had to almost blow it with Washington Square, waiting for next)
Townes Van Zandt (you've got to take the producer out of it)
Lucinda Williams
The Band (is there a timeframe here?)
Ray Davies (Kinks)
Jimmy Webb- Cottonwood Farm from his new record with his sons

Kevin Welch The Other Side from Western Beat, still better than anyone except maybe Townes and S Earle
John Fullbright Never Cry Again ( unreleased) Best New Roots Artist in America
Michael Fracasso Red, White & Blue The Best song ever written about the horror of war and the choices that kill not just soldiers but countries
Jimmy LaFave Every Grain Of Sand ( by Dylan) No one can cover Dylan like Jimmy and this is stellar

greg up too early in okc

These are just those on my mind now - All great artists miss sometimes or they wouldn't be great they would be safe
I would think the following artists have the highest over all recording achievement:
The Beatles
Wilco
Richard Thompson
Steve Earle
Patty Griffin
Lucinda Williams

Four New Artists that I feel will be added to the list.
Felice Brothers
Norah Jones
Brandi Carlile
Monsters Of Folk-They need to continue to record together. It brings out the best in each musican.
Tough question. Dylan's out because of Self-Portrait...he can do wrong, as evidenced by he and Paul Simon's duet...which dq's Simon as well...here's the closest I can come up with:

Jeff Tweedy
Sting
Lyle Lovett
Ryan Adams
B.B.

Great Question!
That's a tough question and one that needs to really have some deep thought..
So with a little deep thought right this second, here are mine...
Gillian Welch
Buddy Miller
Tom Petty
Dwight Yoakam
Leslie Satcher
What about the women?? Why are so few women being talked about in this category??
I think Jewel has got to be up there, but can we take her 0304 album out of the equation??
