I will, I think, take this to my own blog in a bit. I would note, however, that all this cloud stuff is dependent on having a decent ISP. And not all of us do, and not all of us live in places where that's an option. "Follow the money," Deep Throat…

Dirty Linen is Dead, Long Live Driftwood Magazine!

Like most people in the music business, I found myself shocked and surprised by the sudden death of Dirty Linen. A venerated publication for folk/roots/world music, Dirty Linen was where I learned of many great new bands or musical movements. And then one day it was gone. I searched around and managed to find a blog called Dirty Nelson that told… Continue

Review: Ray Charles- Genius + Soul = Jazz (reissue)

There aren't too many musical stones that the legendary Ray Charles left unturned. From pop to R&B to country, rock, soul, jazz, gospel, and blues, name it and Ray undoubtedly covered it at some point in his career and on the recent 2-disc reissue of Genius + Soul = Jazz, we are treated to perhaps the ultimate portrait of Charles as a jazz performer. This i… Continue

Apple rocks the music world...again

What? Isn't today's announcement from Steve Jobs just about a newly designed iPod Touch? And something about streaming TV shows and renting movies? How could this little black box change the way we get and listen to our music?

Thanks to Bob Lefsetz (I'll get to him in a sec) again for pointing out the obvious ju… Continue

New Elvis Costello Album on the Way

From one of the most unnecessarily detailed press releases I've ever read.:

All members of The Imposters and The Sugarcanes feature in a wide variety of groovy new combos with guests Vince Gill, Marc Ribot, Buddy Miller and Leon Russell

Paste magazine to go web-only

After announcing via Twitter that Paste was looking for editorial interns earlier this week, my friend who is an Assistant Editor there tweeted that she guessed she was in the market for a new job. Then this today, from the AP:

ATLANTA — The music monthly Paste magazine is shuttering its print publication after struggling financially for more than a year.

Editor-in-chief Josh Jackson said Wedn… Continue

Two New Songs from Okkervil River's Will Sheff

Okkervil River's Will Sheff recently played a solo show at The Living Room in New York. During the set he broke out two new songs "Walked Out On A Line" and "Lay of the Last Survivor" which you can watch below. Whether these songs will appear on the next Okkervil River record only the future knows, but the strength of these songs is evident, even with only the bare bones accompaniment of Will's acoustic guitar. Good signs of things to come!

Those of you in the Seattle-area can catch Okkervil Ri… Continue

The Road Trip Record Test, Vol. 1.

There's a ritual to road trips, whether for work or play. In the days or week before, I run through longtime favorites as well as the current playlist and decide what albums to bring along. I also usually burn a few mixtapes or grab a classic road mixtape or two, discs with titles like "Goofy Sing-Along 2" (yes, there was a 1, and a 3 and a 4) for a long family trip out West, or "Road Tunes 2003," a classic that features Velocity Girl, Syd Straw, Josh Ritter, Bruce Springsteen, Ryan Adams, Peter… Continue
